PLA Plastic (PolyLactic Acid) is a very popular 3D printing material.

It is both easier to print and more rigid than ABS. The output is slightly more glossy than ABS.

With a choice of 20 colours, you'll be sure to find the right PLA.

3DFillies PLA Information

Our PLA Filaments print between 190°- 215° from the extruder head and should sit on a heatbed between 50°- 60° (with Kapton tape to help removal). Each Filament colour has slightly different ingredients (since each colour pigment is different) which make it important to alter print settings.

Our PLA filaments can be used for Prototyping and Production Grade Printing.

Advantages of PLA

  • Prints without a strong "plasticy" smell
  • Derived from plant products making it more "earth friendly"
  • Better resistance to warping/shrinking than ABS
  • Glossier look to surface than ABS
  • Can be printed at higher speeds than ABS with the correct cooling
  • More rigid than ABS

Disadvantages of PLA

  • Can not glue parts together using Acetone
  • Prolonged moisture can damage faster than ABS
  • Has a lower melting point than ABS so don't leave it in the car on a hot Aussie day.

Below are some PLA Printing Best Practices

PLA loves rapid cooling. Directing the fan to the extruded model is ideal for part cooling.

When printing PLA, it is always good practice to work in a well-ventilated room.

Use Kapton tape on the heatbed for better bed adhesion. A small note about using Blue Painter's tape. Try to get strips of the tape as close as possible to each other, rather than overlapping. It is better to have a small gap than overlap the tape.

Warping is not really an issue with PLA so finding the right setting is not terribly difficult.

The printer bed temperature can range between 0°- 60°.

When storing PLA it is always best to keep it away from moisture (in the air). PLA has a greater tendency to absorb moisture from the air than ABS.
